How to fix a mistake in a voice-over without re-recording
You finish the voice-over for a YouTube video, an explainer or a course module, and on playback you hear it: a wrong number, a misread word, a sentence that came out tangled. Redoing the whole take is the last thing you want, and a single re-recorded line often sounds different from the rest. Here are four ways to fix just that line, and how to keep it in sync with the video.
Fix the line, keep your voice: try Respeak free →
First: fix it before you mix
If you can, fix the mistake on the clean voice track, before music and sound effects go under it. Edits are much easier to hide on a dry voice, and tools that regenerate or clean up speech work best without music. If you only have the finished video, export the voice track from your editing project rather than the final mix.
Option 1: Cut it
If the sentence isn't essential, or you said it twice and the second try is fine, cut the bad part. Cut in a pause, keep a short gap, and make the same cut in the video, or fill the gap with a slide or b-roll.
Works when: the sentence can go. Fails when: the line carries information the viewer needs.
Option 2: Re-record the line
Record the sentence again with the same mic, distance and room, and read the sentence before it first to get back into the same pace and energy. Replace the whole sentence, not one word. It works best on the same day, before your voice and setup change. More in How to re-record one line so it matches the rest.
Works when: you still have the same setup. Fails when: the voice-over was recorded somewhere else, weeks ago, or you're not near your mic.
Option 3: Regenerate the sentence in your own voice
When the setup has changed or there are several lines to fix, Respeak can speak the corrected sentence in the voice from the voice-over itself:
- Upload the voice track, or the video: MP4 and MOV are read in your browser and only the sound is uploaded. It's transcribed into sentences (Chinese, English, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, French, German or Portuguese).
- Click the wrong sentence and type it the way it should be.
- Generate and compare it with the original. You get 3 free generations per sentence, 2 takes each, and its tone and room sound are matched to the audio around it.
- Replace it (1 credit) and export the voice track as WAV or MP3.

Works when: it's your own voice and the track is reasonably clean. Respeak only works with your own voice, and you confirm that before generating. Recordings can be up to 10 minutes on the free trial and 30 minutes after buying any credit pack.
Option 4: Fix it on screen
Sometimes the easiest fix is in the picture: an on-screen correction, a caption, or a slide that shows the right number. Fine for small slips that don't change what viewers should do.
Which option should you use?
| Cut | Re-record | Regenerate | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Needs your mic and room | No | Yes | No |
| Sounds like the rest | Yes, it's the original | If you match the setup | Usually. Check in context |
| Changes the timing | Yes | A little | A little |
Keep the voice-over in sync with the video
- Write the new sentence about as long as the old one, so slides and animations stay where they were.
- Put the fixed track back by lining it up with the old one at the start, then check every edited sentence against the picture. A new sentence can be slightly longer or shorter; nudge what comes after it, or trim a pause.
- On camera? If your face is visible while you say the line, new words won't match your lips. Cut to b-roll or a slide for that sentence.
- Subtitles for the final video: export them after the fix. Respeak's SRT follows the edited audio.
FAQ
Can I fix a voice-over that already has music under it?
It's harder. Fix the clean voice track if you still have it. With music underneath, cuts and a regenerated sentence are easier to hear, and noise removal takes the music out too.
Will the new sentence sound like me?
The voice is made from that voice-over itself, so it matches how you sounded in it. Listen to it in context, with the sentences before and after, before you replace it.
Can I fix a voice-over someone else recorded?
Not by generating it: Respeak only works with your own voice. For a narrator you hired, ask them to record the line again.
What does it cost?
Transcribing, previewing and exporting are free. Replacing a sentence costs 1 credit, and you get 10 free credits when you sign up.
